[Updated 2026] Bangkok's Pet Microchip Mandate Delayed — New Timeline and Registration Rules Explained
The BMA has delayed mandatory microchipping for pets until January 2027. Here is the latest on the rules and standards.

Microchip Mandate: Enforcement Timeline and the Delay
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) had originally planned to enforce its new ordinance on the keeping and free-roaming of dogs and cats starting January 10, 2026. However, it has now decided to push the enforcement date back by one year to January 10, 2027.
The delay was granted to allow more time for public awareness about microchipping to spread, to expand the network of registration service points, and to revisit certain regulations — such as the requirement for landlord consent. It's estimated that there are hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats in Bangkok, but as of late last year, microchip adoption rates were still falling short of targets. The next year will be used to get the necessary infrastructure in place.
Which Pets Are Required to Be Microchipped?
Under this ordinance, microchipping and registration will be mandatory for the following animals:
- All dogs kept within Bangkok ・All cats kept within Bangkok
For now, the focus is on dogs and cats. Exotic animals (rabbits, birds, reptiles, etc.) are not explicitly required to be microchipped for general domestic keeping, unless international trade or specific health certificates are involved. That said, more and more owners of exotic pets are choosing to microchip their animals as a lost-pet precaution.
Microchip Standards and Implantation
Microchips used must comply with internationally recognized standards.
- ISO 11784 and ISO 11785 compliant chips with a 15-digit identification number are required
- The chip is typically inserted subcutaneously between the shoulder blades using a dedicated injector
- It is recommended that the animal be at least 8 weeks (approximately 2 months) old and in good health at the time of implantation
Registration Process and Required Documents
An online registration system is being set up ahead of full enforcement in 2027.
- Online registration: Available through the BMA's dedicated portal (petregis.bangkok.go.th) *For Thai nationals only (a Thai ID is required). Foreigners can complete the paperwork through *this site's assistance service
- Required documents: Implantation certificate from a licensed veterinarian, owner's ID, photos of the pet, etc.
- Where to register: BMA-operated veterinary clinics or designated private animal hospitals
What Pet Owners Should Do Now
While full enforcement won't kick in until 2027, both the Thai government and the BMA are encouraging owners to get their pets chipped sooner rather than later. Beyond making it much easier to identify the owner if a pet goes missing, the microchip system is also planned to eventually link up with rabies vaccination history records.
Also worth noting: if you plan to travel abroad with your pet, or if you're bringing a pet into Thailand from countries like Japan, an ISO-compliant microchip is already a mandatory requirement.
